Junaluska Community Research

In the Autumn of 2020, I contributed to ongoing research to identify the former site of the living quarters of enslaved peoples of Jordan Councill, Jr. in the now Junaluska Community of Boone, North Carolina. My work was done in partnership with Xander Morales.

My project partner and I conducted deed and archival research to determine the likelihood of two sites being the former homes of Councill’s bondspeople. Our research synthesized existing records and oral histories to create a brief but comprehensive report that would support the continuation of the project. Our report was used by a local archaeology team to begin excavations in the Junaluska Community in pursuit of these leads.
